In my opinion, I think that the character of Charles Foster Kane is unlikable, or as said in the topic question, despicable. However, I enjoy the character Orson Welles put together in that of Kane. I believe that the character itself is fantastic, and fits the story perfectly, even if I dislike the character, and don't think that the chr=aracter himself is the greatest person. For instance, take his marriage. The marriage just got further and further apart, as he paid less and less attention to his wife, which is despicable. The whole thing with marriage is to live with one another for the rest of your life, and he did the opposite, just growing further apart. Just because a character is not likable does not necessarily mean he is a good character, and a good plot device, as seen within the movie. Him not being likable to other characters and the audience progresses the plot and makes the movie magic that Welles puts on-screen work.

In my opinion Charles Foster Kane is an unlikable character. This is due to the actions he takes during the course of the film. First he sends his mom to a correctional facility which is fine but later when he has the means to take care of her he wants nothing to do with her and basically just throws his money at her. Second he married a very young and underage girl which is not right in any way. Third he treats every girl he had ever been with terribly he uses people and loves materialistic things and fame he has his priorities backwards. -Matthew Fernandes

Charles Foster Kane

Charles Foster kane is not a likeable person. In the movie we hear different sides of views on Kane given by his old friends and lovers not all of them had something nice to say about him. In the movie he likes spending and collecting for the sake of it not to give them a meaning. Kane is a lonely man himself and drives away everyone who cares for him. He is a selfish man and doesn’t care for anyone else but himself. He wants to please himself. The attempt he tries to control his relationships is a fail, the way he treated his second wife into forcing her to sing when she’s had enough and didn’t want to do it no more. He wants everyone to worship him and act like he is above all.

Charles Foster Kane is not a likeable character because of how selfish, arrogant and controlling he is to people. Kane doesn’t care about anyone else but himself meaning in any situation he will put himself above you, he’s trying to control his second wife by forcing her to sing which isn’t right. Kane is also arrogant in situations and seems to not want anything to do with his mother. Overall Kane isn’t a likeable person because he has that “I’m better then everyone else” mentality.

Charles Foster Kane is both a likeable and unlikable person. His personality and charisma are what draw his colleagues and his wives to him. He is very proper and knows how to talk to people and be sarcastic in a likeable way. His actions are very unlikeable, especially for the watchers because we know the motives for his actions. He wants everything to benefit himself and pressures his own wife to do something she doesn’t even have a passion for. If he was less charismatic, he would never be where he was by the end of the movie.

Charles Foster Kane is not a likeable person for how selfish, cocky and controlling he is. Ever since Charles' childhood has been taken away from him, he used his money to try and recover forgotten memories from his past, not considering the feelings of others. Charles Kane is also cocky because he has no problem showing of his wealth. During a particular scene when Mr. Thatcher was complaining what Mr. Kane said about a war, he brought up the fact that he lost a million dollars. Charles Kane's response is that he will expect to lose a million in the current year and the next. He states that at that rate, he will have to close the business in sixty years. Above everything, he is too controlling. When he got married to that opera singer, he did everything he wanted and not cared about others. The two only did what Charles did. So in all, I would say that Charles Kane is not a likeable person since he only cares for himself.

In my opinion, Charles Foster Kane is indeed a mess because he has wealth and power, but is not sensitive to others. I think this because of the way he treated Leland and other coworkers. It was rude and disrespectful. How he cheated on his wife with the younger lady was hurtful. When he locked up the younger lady, basically in his mansion, he treated her like a doll.

Each person has a different opinion on Charles Foster Kane. Welles is very loyal to Kane, but Welles does think that he is selfish. Leland does not think that Charles Kane is going in the right direction for business. Their decision-making is very different and this causes tension in their relationship. She grows bitter when he pressures her. He pressures her to take singing lessons and to keep going on with the show. Even though Susan is not getting good reviews and wanted to stop, he continues to push.

Charles Foster Kane was taken away from his parents as a young boy. His father was abusive, which caused Charles to act out in his early life. He went from poor to rich and did not get a normal childhood. These life events are part of the reason why Charles treats other unfairly and without dignity

Charles Foster Kane is unlikable in the film. He is depicted to be a controlling and self absorbed character. However the film gives reasons for this as he experienced some traumatic events in his childhood, such as being taken away from his mother. This causes Charles to have trouble with relationships. For example, he is controlling over Susan Alexander because she reminds him of his childhood innocence. Another reason is he also cannot get past his hatred for Mr. Thatcher, which really influences his rash decision making. He does things just to spite Thatcher, such as running the Inquirer. Charles uses his money to try to make up for what he has lost, but in the process it causes troubles for him that lead him to be a not so very nice person.

Charles foster kane is not a likable character. Throughout the movie, he is depicted as very selfish, arrogant, obsessive, spoiled man. He values materialistic objects above most people, and he never asks anyone what they might, he gives them what he thinks they would like, for example: Susan is viewed by him as a toy to play with, like a doll as he dresses her up and makes her do whatever he wants, even when she leaves him, he is so self obsessed that he says "how could you do this to me". He never realized that he is a problem, and not the others around him. He dies isolated, alone, and most importantly not loved by anyone. He does change throughout the film, in to the men that he hates. Never having a childhood, and growing up with money hungry bankers really turned him for the worst as he never knew anything else. I honestly felt very bad for him, it was not his fault he became the man he was.

Citizen Kane Character Analysis

Post  PatrickMitchell on Thu Oct 04, 2018 10:02 pm

Charles Foster Kane was a wealthy newspaper tycoon who rose to power from small beginnings only to lose that power through broken relationships and public scandals. In my opinion, the character is not a likeable man. Through a series of flashbacks, the audience learns about Kane’s life prior to his death. He was a very driven individual who wanted to be successful. However, it was this drive that led to his downfall. Kane was not content unless he was the best and he would stop at nothing to achieve his goals, even if it meant being dishonest and acting immorally. He ran a newspaper; but he was not the type of journalist who fought for truth and justice. He wanted to portray himself as someone who fought for the working class; but he allowed money and power to corrupted him. Audiences love characters that are driven; but Kane was driven by his own self -interest and that is never admirable. Kane would also try and convince others that he was only looking out for their best interests; but this was not the case. For example, he constantly pushed his second wife to be an opera singer despite the fact that she lacked the talent and skill set. In his mind, her role as a famous singer would enhance others perceptions of him. He was more interested in the idea of a person and the role he/she could play in his life than the actual person. In general, Kane was not likable. He did not seem like a genuine person. He was selfish, immoral, and he was only interested in things which would enhance his personal worth. Sometimes in films, the audience is presented with a character like Kane, who has led a poor life and has an awakening. For example, a character sees his weaknesses and he works to try to become a better person. Kane, on the other hand, never has the chance to redeem himself to the audience. Because he dies at the beginning of the movie, the story of his life is related with all his faults and he does not have the chance to correct his mistakes. In the eyes of the audience, he is an individual who made many mistakes; but was never held accountable for them. The audience does not know if he feels remorse or regret so that are left with a very negative impression of the man.

Charles Foater Kane, personally is a likeable person. Why is because even though Charlie is a rich man, who buys friendships and relationships, and does what’s best for him not others, we have to look at his perspective to why he acts like this. He was taken from his family and childhood and is missing a chunk of his life. Instead he was raised by the rich and corrupt, haveing everything given to him and bought for him. He was never able to have a friend or grow up like a normal child, Instead growing up to things he hates, the rich and corrupt. Also the viewer meets Charlie when he is young and is taken through his life, so the audience has that connection with Kane as it seems like they grew up with him.
