Cocoon & Christianity

Post  Polidano on Thu Nov 10, 2016 12:05 pm

Most go to the movies and simply allow the images on the screen to flicker by without giving much thought to theme and/or questions being asked by the film maker.  Let's take a closer look at Ron Howard's  Cocoon and see what we can come up with.  In the climax of Cocoon, the old people are given a chance at what Christianity has always promised: immortality. The aliens will spirit them away to eternal life.  What other connections to Christianity are present in the film?  Feel free to look at the story itself and symbolism/ imagery used.

RE: Cocoon and Christianity

Some other connections that Ron Howard had made to Christianity in Cocoon was the life-rejuvenating water that our main characters encounter in the movie. I believe that Ron Howard is referencing baptism through this strange and peculiar "fountain of youth" due to the fact that this is what sparks the connection between the motley crew of old men and the aliens. Similar to baptism in which God and man are made connected and is the first step for humans to eternal life, it allows these men to encounter the aliens and build a relationship with them as the movie progresses. In which they are personally given permission to continue to use the pool as they see fit as long as they promise to not reveal the aliens' true forms. This acts as an initiation for these old men since it brings them closer to these other worldly beings from another planet. In which the aliens promise to provide eternal life and paradise if the old men and their friends were to come with them. Similar to what God promises if we live a righteous life. Moving on, the aliens also act as a connection to Christianity since they represent angels. Being other worldly beings, the aliens act righteous and kind towards humans despite their greed for the pool resulting in the death of their companions. In which they still offer them eternal life despite what they had done. These are the few of the many examples of Cocoon's connection to Christianity within the film.

In Cocoon, I saw a few things that I thought referenced Christianity. Firstly, the light of the UFO that is shown when the boat of the oldies is being taken into it could represent Heaven or them coming closer to God. The light is bright and promising, and it is for good that the old people go and live a good life up in the sky. Next for me was the cocoons in the pool that Art, Ben and Joe considered to be the "fountain of youth". As they swim in the pool, it is not the water that is healing them, but the cocoons themselves, as they give off a power which makes the men feel young and alive again. Since it's healing them, I believe it represents the wiping away of sins or sickness, just like how Jesus would cure the blind and people with other problems in some bible stories. The aliens could also act as angels, as they are not evil and are not something to be feared, especially with them being white and emitting a bright light. The angels could be guiding them to Heaven, as that is what the old people want, and that might signify what they are asking of God. Lastly, during the funeral at the end, the priest/man speaking says that they have "all gone to a better place", which they have, but none of them are actually dead. Their old lives on earth are now dead, and a new life begins for them up in space, or "Heaven", where they will live freely until the end of time. Some things might be off and I might've missed a couple of references but these were the things that caught my eye when watching Cocoon that I'm sure have a connection to Christianity.

Besides the aliens taking the people from the retirement home away, there are numerous other nods to Christianity in the film Cocoon. First of all, there is the pool the aliens keep on the property that the old men go swimming in. Water is seen as a rejuvenating symbol in Christianity in acts such as baptism, representing the cleansing of sins and welcoming into God's family. In the movie, the old men are healed and rejuvenated by the water in the pool, thus being granted a new vigor for life which could be interpreted as being similar to a new awakening in baptism. The aliens themselves could also be nods to the angel figures prominent in Christian beliefs. The aliens are beings of light who radiate from their natural bodies very brightly. This is comparable to how angels are interpreted in Christianity as beings of light who, if a human ever saw them, would blind them with their radiant light. The aliens are the ones who make the healing pool possible, thus bringing the restoration to the old men. The parallels with Christianity here are obvious as the angels are quite literally bearers of light and healing energy such as described in Christianity. There are numerous other symbols, such as the light of the UFO shining down on the elderly in the boat when they are being taken by the aliens (this representing the gates of Heaven taking them in), but the pool and the aliens themselves are the most major two symbols that I have picked up on in the movie.

Another example is when all the old people went into the pool that basically made them young again even though they were old they had the mind and body of a much younger human being and this connects to Christianity because the old people are basically getting another chance in life in some way . In our religion when we are ment to die we die but with this pool you can even beat cancer.

Connections to Christianity in Cocoon

Post  marlonG99 on Wed Nov 23, 2016 8:59 pm

Other connections in Cocoon that resemble or have some sort of connection to Christianity is that the aliens that we see in the film are like a luminescent form almost like an angelic, holy glow. The water that the three protagonists swam in, rejuvenates them entirely, in their prime. It's like baptism from sin where they cleansed of all their diseases and ailments. To continue on the point of the aliens form, they give of a warmth when they reveal their true skin, in one of the scenes when the leader put his hand in the pool, the water didn't boil it only warmed up the pool. These angels give a sense of warmth and safety towards the humans.

In the movie Cocoon, there are many scenes which tie the movie to Christianity. Firstly, we begin with the aliens themselves. Their ability to fly, along with their glowing bodies, allow them to be portrayed as angelic. Also, much like in real life, there are artifacts/bodies that hold significance in the Bible story and in the movie there is kind of a similarity with the alien bodies being on earth as well. To continue, you could say that the pool in which the rocks/bodies are placed is the fountain of youth. You may say this as each time the seniors go in, they become their younger selves. I believe that Ron Howard specifically chose seniors to emphasize the idea of the fountain of youth. In conclusion, since the aliens could actually be angels, the fountain of youth is shown, and there are the alien bodies on earth, I would say that Ron Howard deliberately tried to add the aspect of Christianity into his movie.

Cocoon and christianity

Post  dannyd76 on Fri Dec 02, 2016 5:51 pm

Jesus Christ our saviour, cured many ailments while on earth such as healing a leper or giving a blind man sight; the cocoons in the movie do exactly this. In the movie the cocoons were stored in the house with the indoor pool that was owned by the aliens. Our elderly crew found their way into the pool and after they were done swimming they felt like they were kids again. Anything they had wrong with them was healed such as the one who was healed of his cancer. They go to a dance club and although they are made fun of for being old by the end of the night they are the coolest ones there because they could break dance very well. The cocoons like Jesus heal ailments which is a huge connection from the film to Christianity because deadly diseases like cancer were healed easily Jesus, likewise for the cocoons; the healing power shows that these cocoons are special like Jesus. The cocoons are like Jesus on earth. When God or an angel is seen by a human in the bible they appear in a form of flame or light; the alien’s true bodies and souls are literally body shaped flames/light. There is a romantic scene in the movie where Jack and Kitty are in the pool together and Kitty being an alien asks Jack if they want to connect souls as it is very satisfying. Jack says yes and kitty then releases her soul from her body. Her soul was a large, vibrant, red, orange, and yellow fiery ball of light. God and his angels represent light and goodness; in this case Kitty is like an angel and represents light and goodness. She is from another place like an angel is and is made of light. The bible speaks of heaven, a place where the good go to live an everlasting life with God up in the clouds. In cocoon our group of old friends are offered to go and live with the aliens on their planet. The planet would let them live forever and make the feel like the cocoons did. They agree to travel with the aliens to their new planet. They are all beamed up into the alien’s U.F.O. by a large ray of light, which reiterates light and Christianity, and then they are taken off into the stars so that they can live forever. This is definitely a direct connection to Christianity and heaven. Heaven is thought to be a place above us which is why they are risen into a U.F.O. and are taken to another planet in space.

Cocoon

An example of Christianity in the film is the pool itself, it resembles the fountain of youth. Whenever the men enter the pool, they feel great. The pool works like the fountain of youth because it helps them feel younger, they feel stronger and their health increases. It even helps one of the men cure his cacer.
